SRI LANKA 2

Sri Lanka’s Rolling Hills & Coastal Bliss

International flight to Colombo.

Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred just 20 minutes to Negombo, a charming beach town on Sri Lanka’s palm-fringed west coast. Your accommodation is conveniently located within walking distance of the beach and local eateries, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Take a leisurely stroll or hop in a tuk-tuk to soak in the town’s laid-back atmosphere. The next morning, you’ll set off on a scenic boat trip through the lagoon, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Negombo’s vibrant fishing community—a perfect way to ease into your Sri Lankan adventure.

Leaving Negombo behind, you’ll journey inland through lush landscapes, passing cascading waterfalls and dense forests along the way. The drive to Maskeliya, near the iconic Adam’s Peak, takes around 4–5 hours, with a stop for lunch in the quaint riverside town of Kitulgala—famous for its scenic beauty and adventure sports. Maskeliya itself is a peaceful, rural town that serves as a gateway for those preparing to ascend Adam’s Peak. While there’s little to explore here, an early night is highly recommended to rest up for the exciting climb ahead.

Your day begins in the early hours—around 2 AM—as you join locals and fellow travelers at the base of Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred mountains. The illuminated trail of roughly 5,500 steps takes 2–4 hours to climb, and at the summit you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise as golden rays light up the valleys below.

After descending and resting at your hotel, continue to Nuwara Eliya, a two-hour drive through rolling hills and lush tea plantations. Known as ‘Little England’ for its colonial charm, this town is surrounded by emerald tea fields. Here, you’ll have the chance to try your hand at tea plucking with a local expert before checking in to your hotel and enjoying the cool mountain air.

After an early breakfast, you’ll set off by jeep to Horton Plains National Park, a stunning highland plateau renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. As you trek through misty grasslands and cloud forests, you’ll make your way to World’s End, a dramatic cliff edge offering spectacular, uninterrupted views of the valleys below. This scenic three-hour circular walk is a highlight for nature lovers and photographers alike.

After returning to your hotel to freshen up, you’ll continue your journey through winding roads and rolling green hills to the charming town of Haputale. Surrounded by lush tea plantations and forested peaks, Haputale remains a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path destination with an authentic charm. Upon arrival, check in to your boutique hotel and take in the sweeping views over the tea fields, stretching toward the distant hills.

Haputale is renowned for its lush tea fields, and this morning, you’ll delve into the art of tea production with a visit to the famous Dambatenne Tea Factory, founded by Sir Thomas Lipton himself. Here, you’ll learn about the intricate process of transforming freshly plucked leaves into Sri Lanka’s world-famous Ceylon tea.

Following the tour, hop into a tuk-tuk for a scenic ride to Lipton’s Seat, a breathtaking viewpoint offering sweeping panoramas of rolling tea plantations and misty valleys—one of the very spots where Lipton once admired his thriving tea empire.

Next, you’ll visit a nearby village, where you’ll get hands-on in an outdoor kitchen, helping to prepare a traditional meal using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. After enjoying your home-cooked lunch, you’ll return to Haputale, with the rest of the day free to relax or explore at your own pace.

After breakfast, leave the misty hills behind and journey south to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife reserve. Renowned for having one of the world’s highest leopard densities, Yala is also home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and troops of playful monkeys.

In the afternoon, embark on a thrilling jeep safari through dry forests, open grasslands, and shimmering lagoons, with plenty of chances to spot wildlife in their natural habitat. Tonight, spend the night in a comfortable safari tent with modern amenities for an immersive yet cosy experience—or opt for a charming hotel nearby if you prefer.

Today, you’ll make your way to Sri Lanka’s serene south coast, where the tranquil beach town of Tangalle awaits. This peaceful coastal retreat is the perfect place to unwind and reflect on your journey so far.

Over the next couple of days, you can indulge in an Ayurvedic massage, take a leisurely morning stroll along the golden shores, lounge in a hammock with a good book, or savor the freshest ‘catch of the day’ at a beachfront restaurant.

After one last refreshing dip in the sea, you’ll journey to the historic coastal city of Galle, a beautifully preserved colonial town where Portuguese and Dutch influences are still evident in the charming architecture.

Your stay will be in a quaint colonial-style hotel nestled in the heart of the old quarter, putting you within walking distance of cosy cafés, boutique shops, and inviting restaurants. Galle is also known for its thriving art scene, so take some time to explore local galleries and browse unique art shops, soaking in the creative energy of this vibrant town.

Today, immerse yourself in the flavors of Sri Lanka with a hands-on cooking class in the heart of Galle Fort. Under the guidance of a skilled local chef, you’ll learn to prepare several traditional dishes, using fresh, aromatic ingredients. After perfecting your culinary skills, sit down with your fellow participants to savor the delicious meal you've created. You can choose between an 11 AM start for lunch or a 4 PM start for dinner—just be sure to bring your appetite!

The rest of the day is yours to explore at leisure. Sip a coffee in one of Galle’s quaint cafés, wander through charming streets, and indulge in some mouthwatering street food. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, don’t miss the Galle Flea Market, where you can easily lose track of time browsing unique crafts, souvenirs, and local finds.

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and driven north to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s dynamic capital. With its strategic location on the east-west trade route, Colombo has evolved into a vibrant city, blending modern urban life with colonial influences from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British eras.

Depending on your preference and flight schedule, you’ll embark on an exciting city tour—Sri Lankan style—in a colorful tuk-tuk either this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Zipping through bustling streets, past historic landmarks and lively markets, this unique mode of transport offers a fun and immersive way to soak up the energy and character of Colombo before you conclude your journey.

It’s time to bid farewell to the teardrop island as your unforgettable journey comes to an end. Your driver will transfer you to the airport in time for your international flight home.
