SRI LANKA 2

From Cultural Wonders to Coastal Retreats

International flight to Colombo.

The laid-back beach town of Negombo, nestled on Sri Lanka’s palm-lined west coast, is just a short 20-minute drive from Colombo International Airport—making it the ideal place to ease into your Sri Lankan adventure. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel, where you can unwind and settle in.

The rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace—take a leisurely stroll along the beach, soak up the local atmosphere, or simply relax after your journey. The following morning, you’ll delve into Negombo’s rich maritime heritage with a scenic boat trip on the lagoon, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the town’s vibrant fishing community.

Now that you've eased into the rhythm of Sri Lanka, it’s time to journey inland toward the island’s famed ‘Cultural Triangle.’ After a few hours on the road, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Sigiriya Rock, an awe-inspiring fortress rising dramatically from the lush surroundings. Once the royal stronghold of King Kasyapa, this ancient site boasts intricate frescoes, landscaped gardens, and a towering summit offering breathtaking panoramic views—well worth the climb.

After exploring Sigiriya, you’ll continue onward to your hotel near Polonnaruwa, where you can relax and prepare for the next chapter of your adventure.

This morning, you’ll hop on a bike to explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s former royal capital. As you cycle through this ancient city, you’ll encounter well-preserved temples, statues, and palace remnants, each offering a glimpse into the island’s rich history.

After your ride through the past, you’ll stop for lunch at a small, authentic local restaurant to refuel with delicious Sri Lankan cuisine.

To add some variety to your day, the afternoon brings a change of pace with a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park. Thanks to its vast, open landscapes, the park is one of the best places to observe wild elephants in their natural habitat. If you're visiting between June and September, you're in for a special treat—this is when hundreds of elephants gather around the park’s lakes in search of water, creating one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular wildlife experiences.

After breakfast, you’ll leave Polonnaruwa behind and journey through Sri Lanka’s lush countryside toward the scenic hill country. Your destination is Ella, a charming mountain town famous for its breathtaking views, rolling green hills, and relaxed atmosphere—perfect for nature lovers and hikers alike.

For an unforgettable experience, consider taking the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella. This route is often regarded as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, winding through misty tea plantations, verdant valleys, and picturesque villages. If you’d like to include this scenic ride in your itinerary, just let your Travel Specialist know, and we’ll make the arrangements!

This morning, wake up to breathtaking mountain views and the crisp, fresh air of Ella. Your time here is yours to explore at your own pace, with plenty of scenic walking trails to choose from.

For a relaxed trek, head to Little Adam’s Peak, where you’ll pass through lush tea plantations and charming villages before reaching a summit with panoramic views. If you’re up for more of a challenge, the hike to Ella Rock takes around four hours and rewards you with stunning vistas from the top. However, you choose to spend your day, Ella’s natural beauty is sure to leave a lasting impression!

It’s time to swap the mountains for the coast as you journey to Sri Lanka’s stunning east coast. Your destination is Arugam Bay, a laid-back seaside village known for its golden beaches and world-class surf.

For those keen to ride the waves, we’ve included a 90-minute surf lesson suitable for all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your technique, the warm waters and consistent waves make it an ideal spot to learn. If surfing isn’t your thing, simply unwind in a hammock under the swaying palms or lounge by the pool, soaking in the relaxed coastal vibes.

Your journey continues towards Udawalawe National Park, with a special stop at the Elephant Transit Home. Here, orphaned and injured elephant calves are rehabilitated before being released back into the wild. Visiting at feeding time is a heartwarming experience as the young elephants eagerly line up for their milk.

Udawalawe itself is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants, with large herds roaming freely across the vast grasslands. On your jeep safari, you’re almost certain to spot these gentle giants, along with sambar deer, playful monkeys, water buffalo, and a variety of bird species. Keep your camera ready as you venture through this wildlife haven. After an exhilarating afternoon, you’ll head to your hotel nearby, where you can unwind with a refreshing dip in the pool before settling in for the night.

After breakfast, you’ll leave Udawalawe behind and make your way to the southern coast, arriving in the historic city of Galle. This beautifully preserved colonial town reflects a blend of Dutch, Portuguese, and British influences, creating a unique and charming atmosphere.

Your accommodation is a colonial-style hotel set within the heart of Galle’s old quarter, putting you within walking distance of its vibrant cafés, boutique shops, and scenic waterfront. The rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace. Wander through the narrow streets of the Fort, walk along the centuries-old city walls, and visit the iconic lighthouse for stunning ocean views. With its rich history and laid-back coastal charm, Galle is the perfect place to soak in the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.

Today, you’ll dive into the flavors of Sri Lanka with a hands-on cooking class in the heart of Galle Fort. Guided by a local chef, you’ll learn to prepare a selection of traditional dishes using fresh, aromatic ingredients.

After mastering the art of Sri Lankan cuisine, you’ll sit down with your fellow participants to savor the delicious meal you’ve created. Choose between a late morning session for lunch or an afternoon class for dinner—either way, come hungry and ready to enjoy a truly authentic culinary experience!

You will be transferred to Colombo International Airport for your return flight to home.
