Mystical South India: Tigers, Temples & Tea Hills

Upon arrival in Bangalore, a local guide will greet you and escort you to your hotel. After settling in, indulge in a delightful welcome meal featuring local flavors.

After breakfast, explore Bangalore, a dynamic metropolis where India's thriving IT industry meets Victorian-era architecture. Visit the iconic Bull Temple, home to a massive granite monolith of Nandi, the celestial bull. Stroll through the lush Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, showcasing one of the world’s most diverse plant collections, and admire the grandeur of Vidhan Soudha, an architectural masterpiece in Neo-Dravidian style. In the afternoon, leave Bangalore behind as you journey to the historic city of Mysore, where your hotel awaits.

Renowned as one of India’s most vibrant cities, Mysore dazzles with its royal heritage, bustling markets, and reputation as a yoga hub. Your full-day tour delves into the city's rich history, beginning with a visit to the magnificent Mysore Palace—one of India’s grandest royal residences. Marvel at the intricate peacock-themed stained-glass ceiling in the Marriage Pavilion, admire the treasured royal paintings in the Public Durbar Hall, and see the opulent Golden Howdah once used to carry the Maharaja.

Next, ascend the Chamundi Hills to visit the revered Chamundi Temple, known for its intricately carved gopuram and breathtaking panoramic views over Mysore.

In the afternoon, journey to the historic fort town of Srirangapatna, the former stronghold of Tipu Sultan before his defeat by colonial forces. Cross the Cauvery River to explore fascinating monuments that tell the tale of South India’s power struggles, including a striking marble church built by French missionaries.

Return to your hotel in Mysore for a restful evening.

Leaving the tranquil backwaters behind, we re-enter the vibrant energy of India as we travel to Kottayam train station. Here, we board an express train north to Kozhikode, covering over 200 kilometers (125+ miles) in approximately three hours. Traveling in comfortable, air-conditioned chair class, we enjoy a smooth ride aboard carriages designed with modern European influences.

Kozhikode (formerly Calicut) has long been a historic trading hub, first established for trade with Arab and Chinese merchants before gaining prominence in 1498 when Vasco da Gama first set foot in India. This marked the beginning of European exploration and the lucrative spice trade. The city’s cosmopolitan past is reflected in its diverse architecture, featuring mosques, churches, temples, and Portuguese colonial buildings.

In the afternoon, we delve into Kozhikode’s rich trading history, starting with a visit to the Beypore boatyard. Here, traditional boats and dhows are still meticulously crafted by hand, allowing us to witness the age-old boat-building techniques that have endured for centuries. Next, we embark on a walking tour through the old quarter, wandering past historic buildings, places of worship, and the lively central market.

Our day concludes at Kozhikode Beach, arriving just in time for sunset. This is a popular gathering spot for locals, where families and friends come together to eat, play cricket, and watch the sun dip into the Arabian Sea, offering a perfect end to our exploration of this historic coastal city.

Begin your day with an exhilarating canter safari through the dense jungles of Kabini. Keep your eyes peeled for the striking Malabar Pied Hornbill perched on towering rosewood trees, the imposing Indian bison leisurely crossing your path, and, if you're lucky, the elusive Bengal tiger prowling through the bamboo groves.

In the afternoon, embark on a captivating river safari, where you’ll witness the largest gathering of Asiatic elephants, graceful water birds, and marsh crocodiles lurking in the shallows. Guests who take the morning land safari will have the chance to experience the boat safari in the afternoon.

The safari meeting point is approximately an hour from your hotel, so you’ll return for breakfast after 10:00 AM, enjoy lunch around 2:00 PM, and then set off for your next safari adventure.

After breakfast, travel to the charming hill station of Ooty, one of three nestled within the UNESCO-recognized Nilgiri Hills biome. For the next two nights, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the southern plains and the lush tea gardens that blanket the rolling hills.

Built by British colonial forces in 1899, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway takes passengers on a scenic journey through varying gauges, over towering bridges, and along hillsides adorned with lush tea plantations.

Leave Ooty and head to Madurai, one of India’s oldest cities, rich in both religious significance and historical importance. As a center of worship and commerce, Madurai offers a glimpse into the complex heritage of South India. Later in the evening, experience a captivating night ceremony at the city’s grandest temple. During this procession, witness the awe-inspiring sight of Lord Shiva's bronze statue being carried to the bedchamber of the Hindu God of Love, all while being accompanied by prayers and the evocative sounds of temple music.

This morning, explore the magnificent Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India's most impressive religious sites. The temple complex is adorned with 33,000 intricate sculptures that bring to life vivid Hindu myths, set against 12 towering gopuram entrances, each engraved with gods, goddesses, and demons in remarkable detail. The highlight of your visit is the awe-inspiring 'Hall of a Thousand Pillars,' where lifelike sculptures cling to towering pillars within a vast, grand gallery—an extraordinary testament to the region’s architectural brilliance.

After breakfast, cross into Kerala and arrive in Munnar, a picturesque region known for its lush, rolling hills blanketed in vibrant green tea plantations. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, soaking in the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.

Today, explore the natural wonders of Munnar, starting with the serene, mirror-like waters of Mattupetty Lake. At Echo Point, try calling out and wait for the hills to return your voice in a fascinating echo. Then, learn about the origins of your morning tea with a visit to a local plantation. After a day of discovery, return to Munnar for a relaxing evening.

In the morning, travel from Munnar to Alleppey, the heart of Kerala’s extensive waterway network. Upon arrival, board a traditional houseboat, which will serve as both your transport and accommodation for the night. Set off on a leisurely cruise through the winding backwaters and serene lagoons, soaking in the breathtaking rural landscapes and charming villages along the way. For guests who participated in a morning land safari, an evening boat safari is also included.

For over 500 years, the port city of Kochi has attracted merchants and explorers, offering a rich blend of Portuguese homes, ancient mosques, and remnants of British colonial rule, all set against the backdrop of the tropical Malabar Coast. This morning, disembark for a half-day sightseeing tour, beginning with the seemingly humble Mattancherry Palace, renowned for its stunning Hindu murals that depict Puranic legends. Next, visit St. Francis Church, thought to be one of India’s oldest churches, and admire Kochi’s promenade, lined with iconic, spider-like Chinese fishing nets. In the evening, gather for a farewell meal at your hotel to reflect on the journey.

Spend a full day of leisure in Kochi, exploring at your own pace or simply relaxing in this vibrant city. In the early evening, immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage with a Kathakali performance, a traditional dance drama rooted in Hindu mythology. Watch as colorful costumes and expressive movements bring ancient stories to life in this captivating theatrical experience.

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight home, bringing your memorable journey to a close. Safe travels!
