South India Spirit: Culture, Landscapes & Kerala Harmony

Your Indian adventure kicks off today in Kochi with a welcome meeting. If you arrive early, there's plenty to explore in this historic port city. Once a thriving spice trade hub, Kochi has seen Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences shape its past. You might choose to join an Urban Adventure tour or take a leisurely stroll to Fort Cochin’s shoreline, where the iconic Chinese fishing nets create a striking silhouette against the sea.

Start your day with a leader-led orientation tour of Kochi. Hop into a local tuk-tuk and head to Mattancherry, where you'll visit the Dutch Palace—originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later gifted to the Rajas of Cochin by the Dutch. You may also choose to explore the Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth, which houses a collection of rare antiques. Then, wander through the spice bazaars and antique shops of Fort Cochin, soaking in the city's rich history. In the evening, witness a mesmerizing Kathakali performance, a traditional Kerala dance form known for its elaborate costumes and intricate storytelling through expressive movements.

Get ready for a day of travel as you journey deeper into southern India. Board a 3.5-hour train to Coimbatore, soaking in the passing landscapes along the way. From there, continue by private vehicle to the picturesque hill station of Coonoor. Nestled in the Nilgiri Hills, this charming town offers a refreshing escape into nature. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy a delicious included dinner to round off the day.

Start your morning in Coonoor with an orientation walk, taking in the serene beauty of this hill station. Visit a tea plantation to uncover the fascinating history of tea production and witness the process from leaf to cup. Later, hop aboard Ooty’s famous toy train for a scenic ride along the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Grab a window seat for breathtaking views of rolling hills and lush landscapes. Upon arrival in Ooty, explore the enchanting Botanical Gardens, home to more than 650 species of plants and trees. If you’re in the mood for something more leisurely, consider a peaceful boat ride on the lake to soak in the town’s tranquil charm.

Today, take a short drive by private vehicle to Bandipur, where you’ll explore the stunning landscapes of Mudumalai National Park, once the private hunting reserve of the Mysore Maharaja. Since its inclusion in Project Tiger in 1974, the park has become one of India’s premier wildlife sanctuaries. Embark on a thrilling safari in search of tigers, leopards, elephants, sloth bears, sambars, and spotted deer, while also keeping an eye out for the park’s diverse birdlife. Tonight, settle into a family-run accommodation in Bandipur, where you’ll stay in a mixed-gender dormitory with shared bathroom facilities—reserved exclusively for your group.

Journey by private vehicle across the picturesque Karnataka plains to Mysore, stopping along the way to enjoy a traditional biryani lunch with a welcoming local host and their family. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and pleasant climate, Mysore is perfect for exploring on foot. Your leader will take you on an orientation walk to help you get acquainted with the city. No visit to Mysore is complete without a tour of the magnificent Mysore Palace—one of India’s most opulent palaces, adorned with vibrant colors, intricate mosaics, and dazzling mirrors.

This morning, leave Mysore behind and ascend Chamundi Hill to visit the Sri Chamundeswari Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Durga. Next, journey to the town of Somnathpur to explore the stunning Keshava Temple, a remarkable example of Hoysala architecture. You’ll also have the option to visit Tipu Sultan’s mausoleum in Srirangapatna or head back to Mysore for a palm reading or a classic Indian cinema experience. Later in the evening, board an overnight sleeper train for an 11-hour journey to Chennai.

Upon arrival in Chennai, hop into a private vehicle and travel along the picturesque East Coast Road to Mamallapuram. Explore this historic seaport town by tuk-tuk, stopping at the magnificent seventh-century Shore Temple and the impressive bas-relief rock carving known as Arjuna's Penance. Take time to admire the intricately carved mandapams (pillared temple pavilions), observe skilled local stonemasons at work, or simply unwind at a beachside restaurant and soak in the coastal atmosphere.

Journey by private vehicle for approximately five hours, passing through lush landscapes of swaying palm trees and vibrant rice paddies, before arriving in Puducherry (Pondicherry). Upon arrival, set out on a walking tour with your leader and group to explore the city's rich cultural heritage. Visit local temples, the renowned Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the charming French Quarter. As a former French colony, Puducherry retains a distinctly European touch, evident in its elegant architecture, spacious town squares, and even the uniforms worn by local police officers.

Take a taxi transfer to the railway station in Villupuram and board a train bound for Madurai, the revered temple city (approximately six hours). With a history spanning over 2,500 years, Madurai is one of India’s oldest cities, deeply rooted in Tamil culture. Explore the mesmerizing, lamp-lit corridors of the Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, a stunning architectural marvel dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi. Then, gain insight into India’s fight for independence at the Gandhi Memorial Museum, which houses an extensive collection of historical artifacts, including the bloodstained dhoti worn by Mahatma Gandhi at the time of his assassination.

This morning, embark on a scenic drive by private vehicle along winding roads to Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. Nestled in the high ranges of the Western Ghats, this breathtaking sanctuary is one of South India’s most renowned wildlife reserves. Over the next two days, explore the park on foot, immersing yourself in its lush landscapes and diverse ecosystems. Visit a local spice plantation to learn about the region’s aromatic treasures, then experience the warmth of Southern Indian hospitality as you join a local family for an authentic home-cooked meal, savoring traditional flavors passed down through generations.

Return to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary this morning for a guided nature walk through its dense forests and winding trails. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, keep an eye out for tiger tracks, spotted deer, Indian elephants, and the mighty gaur – the world’s largest species of buffalo. This experience is more of a jungle immersion than a traditional animal-spotting tour, allowing you to appreciate the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity. In the afternoon, take the opportunity to unwind—perhaps indulge in an optional Ayurvedic massage at your accommodation or simply soak in the serene surroundings with a refreshing drink in hand.

Traveling by private vehicle, journey through lush landscapes of rubber, tea, and coffee plantations en route to Kerala’s serene backwaters. Upon arrival, board a motorboat to cross over to a charming island village, where you’ll experience the warmth of local hospitality with an overnight stay at a family home. In the late afternoon, set out on an exploration of the island, accompanied by a local English-speaking guide—sometimes even your homestay host! This is a wonderful opportunity to engage with the community and gain insight into their distinctive way of life. Glide through the tranquil waterways on a leisurely punt boat ride, taking in the picturesque surroundings. As evening falls, gather with your host family to share stories over a delicious, home-cooked Kerala meal.

Rise early this morning and take a private boat across the tranquil backwaters to Alleppey. From there, board a local bus for a 2-hour journey back to Kochi. The rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace. Wander along Princess Street for some last-minute shopping, or perhaps sign up for a South Indian cooking class to learn the secrets of Kerala’s rich culinary traditions. Your group leader will have plenty of recommendations, so don’t hesitate to ask for suggestions. In the evening, consider gathering with your fellow travelers for a final dinner at a local restaurant. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to try a delicious “pazham pori” a crispy, golden banana fritter-while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Kochi.
