South India Family Tour: Backwaters To Bay of Bengal

Arrive in Cochin and transfer to your hotel to relax after your flight. In the evening, enjoy a captivating Kathakali dance performance. This traditional dance form features performers in elaborate costumes and striking makeup, telling ancient stories and Southern Indian heritage tales through expressive movement and dramatic storytelling.

Today, you'll begin by visiting the market with a local woman who will guide you through the variety of produce and introduce you to key ingredients. Then, head to her home for a hands-on culinary experience where you'll prepare authentic Keralan dishes. After cooking, you'll sit down with your host to enjoy the delicious meal you've made. Later, explore the city, known as the "Queen of the Arabian Sea." This vibrant hub has hosted countless cultures over the centuries, with influences from Arab, Chinese, European, and Indian traders. As you tour the churches, synagogues, and palaces, you'll witness the stunning fusion of architectural styles set against the bustling streets.

Cycling along Kerala's backwaters offers an authentic and unforgettable experience. Ride along the Kochi coast, with scenic views of the tranquil backwaters stretching out beside you. Pedal through quaint fishing villages and past towering coconut trees, eventually reaching a peaceful section of the backwaters. Board a canoe to immerse yourself in the serene surroundings as you float through the waterways. After a brief stop in a village, continue your journey with a short car ride to the jetty, where you'll board a private houseboat. Set sail for an exploration of the stunning Keralan backwaters, the perfect way to experience the vibrant life along the West Coast's canals and waterways.

Today, you'll leave behind the serene backwaters of Kerala and journey into the lush hills of the Western Ghats, arriving at the resort in Munnar. Nestled at the meeting point of three rivers, Munnar sits high in the cool highlands, surrounded by expansive tea plantations and mist-covered hills. Spend the afternoon unwinding by the pool, or, if you prefer, embark on a guided walk through the plantations. Here, you'll learn about the variety of spices grown in the region while also having the chance to spot some of the wildlife and bird species that call this area home.

Today, explore Munnar and its stunning surroundings, starting with a visit to the famous Tea Museum and several nearby tea plantations. Here, you'll discover the different varieties of the world’s most consumed beverage and learn about the various stages of its production, ending with a delightful tea tasting session. Next, head to Eravikulam National Park, a 97 sq. km sanctuary that is home to the largest population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, an endemic species of ungulate found in the southwestern Ghats and the state animal of Tamil Nadu. Keep an eye out for other wildlife, including the Nilgiri marten, small-clawed otter, ruddy mongoose, dusky striped squirrel, endemic bird species, and rare butterflies. In the evening, return to your hotel and enjoy a short cycling ride through the picturesque hill plantations.

Today, you'll be picked up from your hotel in Munnar and transferred to Thekkady, a scenic journey that takes you through the lush forests of the Western Ghats and picturesque spice plantations. Along the way, you'll stop at a spice plantation to learn about the region's spice cultivation before continuing your drive to Thekkady, which typically takes around 3.5 hours, depending on traffic. Upon arrival, you'll be transferred to your hotel. Thekkady is home to the renowned Periyar National Park, a sanctuary for a diverse range of mammals and birds.

Spend the morning exploring the wild beauty of Periyar National Park, where you'll hike through some of the reserve’s more rugged forests and enjoy bamboo rafting. As you journey through this vast sanctuary, you may have the chance to spot tigers, elephants, sambar deer, giant squirrels, and Nilgiri langurs. Known for its rich wildlife, Periyar is a haven for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike. In the early evening, join a specialist naturalist guide for a birdwatching walk, offering a unique opportunity to observe the park's diverse birdlife in its natural habitat.

Today, you’ll leave Thekkady and travel to the vibrant temple city of Madurai, pausing en route for tea and photo stops. On arrival, join your guide to explore the lively backstreets and markets before visiting the iconic Sri Meenakshi Temple for the evening ceremony. With over 2,500 years of history, Madurai is shaped like a lotus and centered around this magnificent Dravidian masterpiece, featuring 12 towering gopurams adorned with intricate carvings. Spend time discovering its courtyards and shrines before witnessing the closing ritual of music and chanting.

This morning, you will be transferred to Dindigul, where you can spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Take the opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside or simply relax at your accommodation, soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

Let the peaceful hillside views and the soothing scent of coffee and lemon growing on the estate immerse you in a deep sense of tranquility. This 18th-century property has remained largely unchanged over the years, preserving its traditional lifestyle. Situated 1,000 meters above sea level, it offers a refreshing escape from the tropical heat of South India. Spend your free day visiting the farm and nearby village, spotting birdlife along the estate's paths, or simply relaxing in a hammock beneath the shade of trees. For those seeking more adventure, guided excursions are available, including nature walks and visits to the hill station of Kodaikanal.

Today, you'll be collected from your hotel in Dindigul and transferred to Chettinad, traveling through the stunning landscapes of the Palani Hills. The journey will offer scenic views, allowing you to take in the natural beauty of the region.

After breakfast, your driver and guide will take you on a tour of the Chettinad region, renowned for its art, culture, and heritage. The area is home to grand mansions built by the Chettiar community—wealthy bankers and businessmen who emigrated in the late 19th and 20th centuries, sending lavish furnishings and materials back to Tamil Nadu. The mansions are known for their stunning hand-made tiles, which you’ll have the opportunity to see being crafted at a local Athangudi tile factory. You may also visit a nearby sweet factory, where you can try your hand at making traditional treats, and a cotton sari weaving center, where you’ll learn how to wear a sari. Throughout the day, explore the strong religious traditions of the Chettiars by visiting some of their temples.

This morning, your guide and driver will transfer you to Trichy airport for your flight to Chennai. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to Covelong, where you can relax and enjoy the next few days on the golden beaches, soaking in the coastal beauty and tranquility.

Explore the charming fishing town of Covelong, known for its surf scene. In addition to surfing, you can try other activities like windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), yoga, and kayaking. Alternatively, simply relax on the beach and unwind, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere of the town.

Another day to relax and enjoy the beach at your own pace.

This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
