Into the Wild South: From Tigers to Tea Hills

Upon arrival in Bangalore, you will be greeted by our representative and driven to Mysore, with a stop en route at the culturally and historically significant town of Srirangapatnam.

Spend the day exploring Karnataka’s cultural capital, once the heart of the Mysore Princely Kingdom. Begin with a visit to the vibrant and lesser-known Devaraja Flower Market, offering a fascinating glimpse into local life. Renowned for its grand festivals and opulent palaces, Mysore boasts an array of architectural marvels, including the breathtaking Mysore Palace. Later, visit the majestic Sri Chamundeswari Temple, perched atop Chamundi Hill, before continuing to Somnathpur to admire the exquisite Hoysala architecture of the Chennakesava Temple.

This morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the breathtaking landscapes of Nagarhole, known for its scenic beauty and thriving national parks. As part of India's renowned 'Project Tiger' initiative, this region is a vital wildlife sanctuary. The three-hour journey to Kabini ensures you arrive in time to embark on an afternoon boat safari along the river, offering a chance to observe the area's rich wildlife in its natural habitat.

Nestled in the lush foothills of the Western Ghats, Nagarhole National Park is a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including Indian bison, elephants, sloth bears, leopards, and tigers. During your stay, you can choose from a variety of activities, such as morning canter safaris, afternoon boat cruises on the Kabini River, birdwatching tours, night walks, and traditional coracle rides, offering a unique way to experience the park’s rich biodiversity.

Bandipur National Park, one of India’s most renowned wildlife reserves and a key Project Tiger site, spans approximately 874 square kilometers in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar district. Home to several endangered species, including gaur, sloth bears, tigers, and four-horned antelope, the park offers a remarkable wildlife experience. After checking in and taking some time to refresh, you will embark on your first safari this afternoon, exploring the park’s diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity.

In addition to its diverse wildlife, Bandipur National Park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, boasting over 200 species, including honey buzzards, Indian vultures, bee-eaters, crested serpent eagles, and various kingfishers. Today, both morning and afternoon game drives offer the opportunity to spot this incredible array of birdlife and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

After a morning nature walk in search of the park’s abundant birdlife, you will continue your journey to Ooty, a charming hill station nestled in the Nilgiri Hills. Surrounded by towering mountains and dense forests, Ooty was a favoured retreat for the British during the colonial era and still preserves traces of its elegant past.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, one of India’s oldest mountain railways, winds through the scenic Western Ghats between Ooty and Coonoor. Built by the British in 1908 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, this historic railway is still powered by steam locomotives, offering a nostalgic journey reminiscent of a bygone era. Enjoy a leisurely and picturesque ride aboard the famous 'Toy Train,' passing through lush hills and tea plantations. Upon arrival at Coonoor railway station, transfer to Tranquil Tea for a tea tasting experience accompanied by lunch. Later, continue by road to Coimbatore, where you will check in to your hotel for the night.

The rolling hills of Munnar, draped in sapphire-green tea plantations, create a breathtaking landscape within the Western Ghats. Often shrouded in mist, the region exudes a mystical charm, perfect for scenic hikes and leisurely drives. Nestled amidst these cloud-kissed hills lies Munnar, once a favoured retreat for the British Raj elite, offering a serene escape into nature’s embrace.

Today, embark on a scenic trek through the breathtaking Letchmi Hills, passing through lush tea plantations, patches of Shola forest, and rolling grasslands. Along the way, take in stunning views of Idukki Dam, the highest arch dam in Asia, and Anamudi, the tallest peak in South India. Keep an eye out for exotic wildlife and endemic bird species, as the Western Ghats are a recognized biodiversity hotspot. Enjoy a picturesque picnic amidst nature before driving back to Munnar, where you have the option to visit a tea museum or the Srishti employment project.

Travel to Thekkady and check into your hotel before visiting a local spice plantation, where you can learn about the region’s aromatic spices and sustainable farming practices. Designed in collaboration with local artisans and farmers, the spice village blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. In the evening, embark on a scenic boat ride on Periyar Lake, offering a chance to explore the region’s unique ecosystem and spot wildlife along the shores.

Spend the morning exploring the wild landscapes of Periyar Nature Reserve on a guided hike and bamboo rafting adventure. As you navigate through dense forests and serene waterways, keep an eye out for wildlife such as tigers, elephants, sambar deer, giant squirrels, and Nilgiri langurs. You may also catch glimpses of native tribes people fishing or swimming in the lake. A paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers, Periyar’s diverse ecosystem offers a unique glimpse into southern India’s rich biodiversity. In the early evening, join a specialist naturalist guide for a birdwatching walk, discovering the region’s vibrant avian life.

This morning, descend from the highlands to the lush alluvial plains that stretch between the Western Ghats and the Indian Ocean. Travel by road to Alleppey, where you will board your private houseboat for a serene journey through the enchanting Keralan Backwaters. As you glide along the tranquil canals and waterways, take in the picturesque scenery and observe daily life unfolding along the water’s edge—a truly immersive way to experience the charm of Kerala’s coastal region.

After disembarking this morning, travel by road to Cochin (Kochi), known as the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea.' As the oldest European settlement in India, Cochin (Kochi) is a fascinating blend of Arab, Chinese, European, and Indian influences. It is home to the country’s oldest church and synagogue, reflecting its rich multicultural heritage. This evening, you have the option to witness an enchanting Kathakali dance performance, a traditional Kerala art form known for its elaborate costumes, expressive movements, and storytelling.

This morning, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight. For those wishing to extend their stay in Cochin (Kochi), a variety of enriching experiences are available, including a hands-on cooking class with a local chef or a captivating storytelling session that delves into the myths and rituals of everyday Indian life. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a relaxing beach retreat, a selection of stunning coastal properties offers the perfect setting to unwind and savor your final days in South India.
