Cultural Treasures of South India: Tamil Nadu to Kerala

Welcome to South India! Upon landing at Chennai Airport, you will be warmly received and escorted to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to relax or explore the city independently. In the evening, gather at the hotel to meet your guide and fellow travelers for a Welcome Meeting.

Bid farewell to Chennai this morning as we journey to the charming French colonial city of Pondicherry. Once under French rule until 1954, the city's architecture still reflects its colonial heritage.

En route, stop at Mahabalipuram to explore the stunning 7th-century Shore Temple, perched on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Visit Arjuna’s Penance, the world’s largest bas-relief carving, before marveling at the remarkable Five Rathas—five distinct temples, each intricately carved from a single rock. These UNESCO-listed temples remained buried under sand until their rediscovery by the British two centuries ago.

Today, we discover the highlights of Pondicherry, starting with a visit to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a renowned spiritual community. Stroll along Pondicherry Beach, where golden sands meet the gentle waves of the Bay of Bengal. We then explore the striking Sacred Heart Basilica, a revered Christian pilgrimage site known for its stunning Gothic architecture. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure.

Departing Pondicherry, we journey to the lively city of Tanjore (Thanjavur), a historic gem with a legacy spanning over 1,500 years. On a guided tour, delve into the city’s rich past and marvel at the magnificent Brihadishwara Temple. Over 1,000 years old, this architectural masterpiece features an enormous dome, believed to have been hoisted into place using a technique similar to that of the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Today, we journey to Chettinad, a region famed across India for its rich and aromatic cuisine. Despite its culinary renown, this tranquil village remains a hidden gem. Explore the fascinating Chettinad Palace, an architectural marvel reflecting the grandeur of a bygone era. Then, visit the renowned tile factory in Athangudi, where your guide will unveil the intricate process of crafting Chettinad’s signature handmade terracotta tiles.

Leaving Chettinad behind, we journey to the vibrant city of Madurai. Upon arrival, embark on a half-day guided tour, starting with the magnificent Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal, a 17th-century palace famed for its towering circular pillars and grand courtyard. Next, visit the awe-inspiring rock-cut temple of Thirupparankunram Murugan, a sacred site where, according to Hindu legend, Lord Murugan vanquished the demon Surapadman. In the evening, witness the mesmerizing Aarti prayer ceremony at the iconic Meenakshi Temple, where flickering candlelight and devotional songs create a deeply spiritual atmosphere.

Departing Madurai, we make our way to the scenic hill station of Munnar, where we’ll spend the next two nights. Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walk through a lush tea plantation, gaining insight into the region’s rich tea heritage, before exploring a vibrant local market. The rest of the day, as well as the following day, is yours to spend at leisure. You may choose to visit the nearby Blossom Park, where you can enjoy cycling or boating amidst breathtaking natural scenery.

Heading south, we journey to Periyar, one of South India’s most renowned wildlife sanctuaries. This vast reserve is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including bison, antelopes, sambar deer, wild boar, and a rich variety of bird species—perhaps even the elusive tiger. Nearby, the charming town of Kumily, where we’ll be staying, is dotted with spice and handicraft shops. With plenty of activities to choose from, the rest of the day is yours to explore at leisure.

This morning, embark on a scenic boat ride across Lake Periyar, offering a chance to spot herds of wild elephants and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. You may choose to visit a local spice plantation to learn about the region’s aromatic spices or witness an exhilarating Kalaripayattu performance, showcasing Kerala’s ancient martial art form.

Leaving Periyar behind, we journey to Kumarakom, a picturesque village set across a cluster of islands on the serene waters of Lake Vembanad. The rest of the day is yours to relax or explore at your own pace. You may choose to take a peaceful boat ride on the lake or visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a haven for rare bird species and an essential stopover for migratory birds during the winter months (November–May).

We take a scenic drive to Alleppey, the gateway to Kerala’s breathtaking backwaters. Here, we board our private deluxe rice boat for an unforgettable journey through the palm-fringed waterways. As we cruise leisurely along 20 kilometers of serene backwaters, witness charming villages and glimpses of everyday rural life along the shores. Enjoy a stunning sunset over the tranquil waters before savoring delicious meals prepared by our onboard chef, using fresh local ingredients—starting with a delightful lunch.

This morning, we disembark from our rice boat and travel to Kochi, a historic coastal city once a princely state, fondly known as “The Queen of the Arabian Sea.” The rest of the day is yours to explore at leisure, discovering Kochi’s rich heritage and vibrant streets. In the evening, you may choose to attend an optional Kathakali dance performance, where elaborately costumed and intricately made-up performers bring ancient stories to life in a mesmerizing display of drama and expression.
