North India Beyond Time
Upon arrival at Delhi International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our representatives. You’ll then be transferred to your hotel in the city, where you can settle in and relax for the night. Upon arrival at the hotel, we’ll have a welcome briefing just before Meal.
Our journey starts in Delhi, we set off for Jaipur, a drive of approximately five to seven hours depending on traffic. Along the way, we’ll take a break for lunch and restroom stops. Upon arrival in Jaipur you will be transferred to your hotel for overnight stay.
Rise early for a dawn walking tour as Jaipur, the Pink City, comes to life. Stroll through the old walled city’s districts, watching residents begin their day, rituals in markets and temples, and artisan communities at work.
Return to the hotel for breakfast before continuing to Jantar Mantar, the remarkable 18th-century observatory, and the iconic Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), with its intricate pink sandstone façade.
Later, visit the majestic Amber Palace, a hilltop fort overlooking a lake, with grand courtyards, ornate halls, and the dazzling Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors).
In the afternoon, explore a textile workshop where hundreds of artisans practice traditional block printing. Learn about the craft, then browse a range of handmade items from garments to stationery.
Today we journey through the rural heartland of India to Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, a drive of approximately five hours. Our hotel, conveniently located near the park entrance, provides easy access for two included game drives: one this afternoon and another next day morning.
Ranthambore is among the most renowned reserves established under Project Tiger, a government-led conservation initiative launched in 1973. While poaching once severely impacted the park’s tiger population, recent efforts have led to a promising resurgence — the 2023 census revealed a 25 percent increase in tiger numbers, rising from 69 in 2022 to 88.
As we venture through the reserve, we keep our eyes peeled not only for the elusive Bengal tiger but also for an array of other wildlife, including sambar and spotted deer, crocodiles, and a rich variety of birdlife such as purple herons, kingfishers, cormorants, parakeets, and partridges.
We begin the day with an early morning game drive in Ranthambore, heading out before breakfast in search of more wildlife. After the safari, we return to the hotel for breakfast and time to freshen up before checking out.
On the way to Agra, we stop at Fatehpur Sikri, Emperor Akbar’s short-lived capital built in 1571. This red sandstone city is remarkably well-preserved, with its grand mosque, royal palaces, and audience halls offering a vivid glimpse of Mughal life. Abandoned just 14 years later, it remains one of the most striking sites of the era.
By early evening, we arrive in Agra after a long but rewarding day’s journey of around seven hours.
Rise early for a magical sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, when the soft morning light bathes the white marble in a golden glow, the atmosphere is serene, and the crowds are fewer. After taking in its majestic exterior, we step inside to explore the intricate inner chambers and mausoleum, as our tour leader shares the poignant story behind this iconic monument.
Nearby, we explore the impressive Agra Fort, built by Emperor Akbar. Within its towering red sandstone walls lie exquisite structures such as the white marble Pearl Mosque, royal halls, palaces, and tranquil courtyards. It was within these walls that Shah Jahan, the creator of the Taj Mahal, was held captive by his son Aurangzeb in his final years.
In the evening, we transfer to Agra railway station and board the overnight sleeper train to Varanasi. A light snack is provided on board.
We arrive in Varanasi this morning and transfer to our hotel. On the banks of the sacred River Ganges, Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest inhabited cities and the spiritual heart of Hinduism. The city is alive with narrow alleyways, busy markets, shrines, and ancient temples. Pilgrims bathe in the river, Sadhus walk the ghats, and rituals unfold throughout the day.
You’ll have time to explore independently, perhaps shopping for the region’s famous silks and brocades or enjoying a traditional massage by the river.
In the afternoon, you may choose to visit Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment. Highlights include the Dhamekh Stupa, the ruins of monasteries and temples, and the archaeological museum with its collection of Buddhist artefacts.
Your tour leader can help arrange optional excursions to make the most of your stay in this remarkable city.
Just before sunrise, we embark on a serene boat ride along the Ganges to witness one of India’s most spiritual and captivating daily rituals. As the soft early light bathes the ghats in gold, we observe thousands of Hindu pilgrims performing morning ablutions, offering prayers, and participating in age-old ceremonies along this 3mi (5km) stretch of riverbank. It's a moving and unforgettable glimpse into the sacred rhythms of Varanasi.
In the afternoon, we board the Vande Bharat Express to Delhi, a modern high-speed train that offers a comfortable journey through villages, towns, and farmland. A light meal is served on board, though you may wish to bring extra snacks or fruit.
We arrive in Delhi late in the evening and transfer to our hotel for the night.
Today is free for you to relax at your leisure or explore the fascinating sights of New and Old Delhi. If you prefer a guided experience, an optional sightseeing tour can be arranged. Notable landmarks to consider include the imposing Red Fort, the elegant Humayun’s Tomb, and the iconic India Gate. You may also wish to visit Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India, the serene Sheeshganj Gurudwara (a prominent Sikh temple), and Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. For those interested in shopping or picking up souvenirs, the bustling market areas of Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh offer a vibrant array of goods and local flavours.
Our adventure through northern India comes to an end today. If you’re not quite ready to leave and still have a few pages left in your travel diary, consider speaking to us about extending your stay in Delhi. Otherwise, it's time to head to the airport and begin your journey home, taking with you unforgettable memories of this vibrant and diverse land.
